/ Biomedical Art and Visualization / Experience with Rowan VR Lab internship / Interest in Graphic Design and User Interface
The relationship I have with creative projects has been greatly impacted by experiences throughout my college career. After starting my college career in studio art, I realized I wanted to do more. I discovered the fields of medical and scientific illustration, and I began my path in Biomedical Illustration and Visualization. Seeing practical applications for artistic endeavors has given me a feeling of purpose beyond my own vision as an artist. My personal interests and curiosities often influence the projects I choose to work on, affording me the opportunity to research and learn more about new topics.
Over the course of my college career, my ideas have matured as my skills and knowledge of design and illustrative skills has become more finely honed. A major consistency between all my projects, design or illustration, is the creative process. Although there is some level of variation based on the demands of the project, I generally undergo a systematic process: research, sketching, transferring to the final medium for a first draft, first revisions, final draft, and final revisions. This process helps me to remain focused and ultimately leads to more consistent, properly informed decisions throughout the stages of the work. I utilize both physical and digital mediums, depending on the application. Digital is perfect for professional quality design, while physical mediums have personality and organic qualities for detailed illustration. I am consistently inspired by exploring new mediums as a reason to learn new things and expand my skill set.
My work is mainly tailored to demonstrating the marriage of design and illustration and the importance of both aspects. There is a change in meaning when the designed work is juxtaposed with the original art. This show is meant to demonstrate potential applications to the fields of medical illustration, scientific illustration, and information design. I am specifically inspired by artists such as Max Bröedel, Edward Tufte, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Massimo Vignelli. Bröedel’s work is the epitome of delicate, accurate medical illustration. Tufte is an incredible example of comprehensive and visually interesting information design. Merian’s work is meticulous, revolutionary in scientific illustration, and a major milestone in the underrepresented history of women artists. The major goal of my artistic output has been to make art with purpose. I strive to still find joy and satisfaction in creating art for expression, separating this from my future career. I will continue to learn and nurture creative skills, and hopefully find a niche that fits the qualities of my pieces. I eventually aspire, with experience and hard work, to make an impact, cultivate a positive professional reputation in the medical and scientific art fields.
One of my first "medical" focused pieces. Completed for my senior year final of high school. Thread, canvas, string, wood. 2018.
